Introduction

Life is a journey, from birth to death. We choose the direction our paths take us. My journey as a nurse began 28 years ago. As a registered nurse, I have had the opportunity to experience many areas of the nursing profession. From the humble beginnings of
a student nurse and extern, to the ranks of middle management. I have endured the failures, and appreciated the successes. I have been touched by many, and hopefully touched many in return.
While advancing through the ranks of nursing, I have worked in areas such as cardio-pulmonary, cardiac rehab, radiation therapy, a pain clinic, and emergency medicine. Currently, I am employed by the Calhoun County Public Health Department, as a school nurse. Working with children from preschool to the 12th grade has been both an education, and a joy. The transition from the acute care setting into the community setting has prompted me to review my nursing practice and adapt it to meet the needs of a community.
As a graduate of Ferris State University's MSN program, I have learned the importance of the Master's prepared nurse to our profession. Through the academic process I have improved my communication, research, problem solving, and critical thinking skills. The importance of theory to the profession of nursing has become evident. As a future nurse educator, it is my hope to prepare the next generation of nurses by using theory-based practice, to provide professional, quality and compassionate care.
In August, I will achieve another personal goal by completing a Post Master's Certificate from the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner-Primary Care program, at Vanderbilt University. My plan is to complete my certification in late September. By providing health care and education to this population early in life, enhances the development of healthy behaviors for life.
This portfolio will present examples of my educational journey at Ferris State University, and Vanderbilt University providing proof of meeting each graduate nurse objective required in the MSN/Post Master's program. The National League for Nursing, nurse educator core competencies will be addressed. Also included is my current curriculum vitae' and resume' to provide additional proof of my professional nursing experience, skills, and commitment to the nursing profession.
Like the sunflower, I am reaching towards the sky to thrive, and pursue my personal and professional goals, while achieving my dreams. My journey continues!
