  NLN Core Competencies

The National League for Nursing has established eight core competencies for the nurse educator.  "The National League for Nursing promotes excellence in nursing education to build a strong and diverse workforce to advance the nation's health" (NLN, 2011).

As a nurse educator, I am held accountable to meet these core competencies.  By adhering to these recommendations, nurse educators provide quality nursing education and promote the professionalism of the nursing profession.  Included below is my vision of each core competency.  Also included is the FSU outcome required to meet the NLN competency.  As a novice nurse educator, reality will influence and shape my practice.  As an experienced nurse, I have the foundation on which to build.

The slide below was designed to represent my vision of the staff nurse educator roles.  Using a conceptual framework, all roles are intertwined with my philosophy of teaching at the heart of it all.  This was an early attempt at developing my personal teaching philosophy.   It also demonstrates the expectations of the NLN and ANA on the nurse educator.
