Scholarship for Practice
All of the courses in the Ferris State online MSN program have required the use of research. Without research the nursing profession would not have access to evidence-based practice. “Evidence-based practice is the integration of the best research evidence with clinical expertise and the patient’s unique values and circumstances in making decisions about the care of individual patients” (Yoder-Wise, 2011, p. 416).
Nurses must be proficient in research methods in order to understand and contribute to their profession. Once the research is completed, it must be organized in a logical way for interpretation. Both quantitative and qualitative methods may be used. I have included two supporting artifacts.
The first artifact includes an assignment to create an evidence-based PICO poster presentation following the criteria from a chosen nursing conference call for abstract. Since I am a school nurse, I selected a conference hosted by the American Diabetes Association addressing primary and secondary health care providers. With a focus on Type I Diabetes, the poster examined the role of the school nurse as a primary and secondary health care provider, and their impact on the Type I diabetic students' HbA1c. The presentation is narrated to simulate an actual conference presentation.
A nursing educator is required to take an active role in the assessment and redesign of curriculums on a continuous basis. This artifact represents a scholarly approach to evaluating a chosen schools curriculum, making suggestions for redesign. For this assignment, the curriculum of Kellogg Community College was examined. This is an Associate Degree program, one in which I graduated from 27 years ago. It was interesting to look at the changes which have occurred. This project allowed me to view the Kellogg Community College nursing program through the eyes of a educator. The final artifact was created by myself for a high school career day presentation.
