Professionalism

Professionalism is important to all professions. It is portrayed in the way a person behaves, performs, dresses, make decisions, in fact it is found in all aspects of a career. A nurse who treats nursing as a profession stands tall. They realize the importance of pursuing advanced education, attending seminars and participating in research. “Status as an employee of a particular hospital, home health agency, long-term care facility, or other venue is secondary to one’s status as a member of the profession of nursing” (Yoder-Wise, 2011, p. 182).
Professionalism is an expectation in all aspects of the MSN program. The development of this portfolio is an example of my continued clinical and academic growth. Each course requires multiple discussion board conversations with instructors and other MSN students. Each virtual encounter must remain professional with respect of others' views and ethics.
The artifacts included for this outcome include a group project presentation on the development of a PICO journal club. The focus was on creating a professional virtual group to promote a professional dialogue. This assignment represents the initial attempt at the creation of a philosophy statement. The second is a reflective journal from my final Capstone practicum. The journal assisted with problem solving and evaluation of project progress. Each is representative of professionalism towards self and others.

Patterns of Knowing |
Carper's patterns of knowing in nursing assists nurses with professionalism. It guides their practice in both the art and science of nursing, in ethical decisions, while building successful relationships. These patterns of knowing are useful to both students and educators alike (Carper, 1978).

Mindfulness |
Living in the moment brings nursing into a state of mindfulness. Understanding our own visions and beliefs, putting ourselves in the shoes of others, helps practitioners better understand their own visions and nursing practices (Bloom, 2007). Being mindful encourages reflectivity promoting resolution to conflicts.
